Announcing our latest donations, and your feedback on the dual shortlists

Hi Team!

We’re excited to announce the winners of our Giving Cycle 5 donations!

Local Legend - Rural Doctors Foundation - $15,000

Global Impact - Fistula Foundation - $4,000

This giving cycle, we trialled a new approach by separating organisations into two shortlists: community-based local partners, and organisations tackling larger global health issues. You can revisit the shortlist here.

What Our Funding Will Accomplish

Our donation to the Rural Doctors Foundation will expand their flagship program, “GPs4RuralDocs”, which funds a visiting GP to visit rural health workers. Bringing this care closer to home reduces the pressure on our colleagues in the bush to leave town and travel long distances (often days) to facilitate their own routine GP care, which has large knock-on effects to their communities and practices. By supporting local health workers, we are directly increasing their availability in their communities. You can read more about the program here.

Our donation to the Fistula foundation will directly support 3-4 curative fistula repair surgeries, plus associated care, for women living with obstetric fistula overseas. The Fistula foundation has a well-established track record for efficacy and impact (which is how it ended up on our shortlist!), which you can read more about here.

We’ve already had contact from both partners who are keen to tell us more about the impact of the donations - we look forward to keeping you updated over the coming months!

What Did You Think About the New Process?

We will continue to be guided by how you much you like (or don’t like) new things, such as this dual-shortlist option covering a greater spread of charities. We are a diverse community of early-career doctors with diverse interests; our main focus is a combination of flexibility and transparency so we can stay responsive to your interests!

With that in mind, here are the results from the feedback we got from you on your voting forms.

This cycle, 24 of 46 eligible givers voted. Members of the management team (who are also givers) abstained from voting to avoid skewing results.

1= "I preferred the old model" , 5= "Love this new model!"
1= "I preferred the old model" , 5= "Love this new model!"
1= "Didn't Excite Me this time" - 5= "Loved the options!"
1= "Didn't Excite Me this time" - 5= "Loved the options!"

We also received specific feedback!

A clear theme in the written feedback was a preference for prioritising local or national healthcare impact, alongside strong respect for the quality and impact of the global organisations shortlisted:

“Focusing on local/national options is preferred at this stage.”

”I would prefer bigger donations to local issues over dividing the amount” ”Both of my votes are causes close to my heart …awesome choices team, thank you!”

“Love both global charities. Truly impacting people who otherwise wouldn't receive help. Both have strong evidence base.”

”Would love to continue the focus on local healthcare issues, but appreciate the option of putting a smaller percentage towards a good cause overseas as well” ”

Personally have a preference for a focus on charities that are local/within our region.”

”Loved both local options. Would have preferred to select both local options”

What Does This All Mean?

This feedback told us that a strong majority of the givers enjoyed the option of something different, but there’s still an appetite to focus on the local or community-level organisations tackling health inequity.

As we plan future giving cycles, we’ll decide whether to repeat this model - and what any future split might look like - informed by your feedback and input from the Advisory Committee.

We continue to rely on your input. If you have more you'd like to tell us, reach out on instagram or via email (info@oneforhealth.org.au) anytime.

Thanks for being on this journey with us!

Yours in Giving Better Together,

Ollie
