Earbus Foundation

About Earbus

Earbus Foundation of WA was established in 2013 to improve the ear and hearing health of Aboriginal and at-risk children across Western Australia. It delivers culturally safe ear health screening, clinical assessment, treatment and follow-up care through a fleet of purpose-built mobile clinics that travel to schools and community settings across metropolitan, regional and remote WA. In 2025, Earbus screened 4,311 children across 95 regional trips, travelling more than 208,000 kilometres.

What our $19,000 grant would fund

The grant would fund approximately 9 to 10 outreach visits across Perth metropolitan and outer suburban schools, early learning centres and community setting, reaching up to 500 children. Each visit provides screening, clinical assessment, follow-up and referral delivered close to where children live and learn. At approximately $2,000 per metro visit (compared to $15,000 to $35,000 for a single regional trip), the funding will support multiple visits across the year rather than a one-off contact. Perth metropolitan outreach is currently a funding priority for Earbus, because it has no confirmed dedicated funding in place, despite ongoing demand.

OOXii (Glasses on Eyes)

About OOXii
OOXii ("Glasses on eyes") is a charity founded by an Australian ophthalmologist, and has developed an innovative method of testing vision and dispensing glasses. It's portable, durable and affordable, and can be administered by basic health workers, without an eye health professional on site. OOXii trains Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers to use the innovative OOXii Vision Kit in remote and low-resource communities where eye health professionals aren't accessible. The OOXii Vision Kits have been used successfully in PNG, Vanuatu and other Pacific Island countries.

What our $19,000 grant would fund

The funding would enable OOXii to conduct 2 pilot projects in outlying Indigenous communities (Katherine NT and Mount Isa Qld) where glasses are not accessible and where OOXii has medical staff who are willing and able to use the OOXii Vision Kits. At least 4 health workers will be trained to use the kits, and their test results will be verified by an optometrist or ophthalmologist and glasses will be provided immediately to anyone who needs them. It is expected that 2000 people will be screened and 1000 pairs of glasses will be provided. Assessment of local acceptability and cultural safety will be assessed concurrently. This information will be vital in demonstrating a new way of glasses provision which is culturally appropriate and desirable, especially in remote communities where glasses are currently not accessible, with a view to expand the project across the country should the pilot be successful.

Red Dust

About Red Dust
Red Dust has spent over 20 years delivering health, wellbeing and reconciliation programs in remote Indigenous communities across the Northern Territory, co-designed in partnership with those communities. Its "community-as-family" model draws on both Western health knowledge and traditional cultural knowledge, using sport, art, music and dance to engage young people rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. In 2025, Red Dust delivered 170 community programs and sessions, supported by over 270 Indigenous volunteers, reaching 1,980 participants across its Healthy Living, Strong Young Women and Strong Young Men & Boys programs. Its program footprint has expanded from 7 to 15 remote communities across the Top End and Central Desert regions.

What our $19,000 grant would fund

The grant will fund a pilot of Red Dust Radio, a community health-focused radio and podcast platform for regional and remote NT communities, amplifying the voices, stories and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through community-led content. The pilot will be hosted by Jonathan "Jonzy" Lindsay-Tjapaltjarri Hermawan, a Pintupi-Luritja speaking musician from Walungurru, and Mikaela Simpson, a former ABC Darwin radio presenter. The $19,000 covers a producer, production and post-production, studio and equipment hire, music licensing, and communications and internet costs. There is potential for expansion of the project to over 200 First Nations and community radio stations, podcast channels and social media, multiplying the reach and value of the investment. A successful pilot will include the development of a core group of aligned partners and supporters would contribute toward annual operational costs, in addition to integrated health promotion content, sponsorship partnerships and seasonal campaign collaborations to ensure the longevity of Red Dust Radio.

The VacSeen Project

About The Vacseen Project

Founded in 2021 by a group of UQ medical students, the VacSeen Project's mission is to prevent disease in people experiencing homelessness by taking medicine into familiar, non-medical spaces. It runs regular outreach primary care clinics across five Queensland cities, in shelters, alongside other service providers, or on the street, offering medical treatment, scripts, vaccinations, referrals and mental health counselling to people facing significant barriers to healthcare access. In 2025, its clinics saw over 250 patients, and it has already seen more than 126 patients across 26 clinics in the first months of 2026. Clinics are led by senior clinicians and supported by medical students, embedding outreach experience directly into medical training.

What our $19,000 grant would fund

The grant would be used across three key areas.

Upgrade clinical capacity: integrating point-of-care blood testing and ultrasound equipment into the clinic model and expanding the allied health workforce, to address the consistent challenge of low re-presentation and follow-up rates. This will also support start-up costs for new clinics in Logan and Rockhampton.

Expanding the Health Packs program: building on the 150 packs already produced with Queensland Community Benefit Fund support, which include self-care essentials and locally tailored healthcare information.

Engage dedicated mental health support staff to attend the clinics: providing on-site assessments, brief interventions and referrals, and actively facilitating access to longer-term, bulk-billed psychological care. This is in direct response to 2025 survey data that identified mental health concerns as one of the most common presentations of Vacseen’s patient population, for which there is currently limited capacity to provide care for.
